Rifugio Duca d'Aosta
Località Piè Tofana
From Piè Tofana take the chairlift to Rifugio Duca d'Aosta. The mountain hut, built in 1938, is located at 2,098 metres at the foot of the Tofane mountains in a splendid scenic position. Steeped in history and tradition, it owes its name to Amedeo di Savoia-Aosta, a member of the House of Savoy and son of Emanuele Filiberto, the second Duke of Aosta. The Duke used to frequent Cortina and, as was the custom at the time, it was deemed prestigious to dedicate the mountain hut to such an illustrious guest. From here, take the Sentiero dei Camosci, 405, located below the mountain hut. The path zigzags along the upper part of the Tofana gully and also crosses the base of the Tofana rock face, runs along it until it reaches the Forcella Rossa slope and crosses path 407. In this area, if you are lucky, you might spot some chamois, which populate the area. Take path 407 and follow it until you reach the starting point near Baita Piè Tofana. The little house at the foot of the Tofane hosted the timekeepers of the 1956 Winter Olympics and has now become a traditional hut at the end of one of the most famous ski slopes in Cortina d'Ampezzo. By car: From the centre of Cortina follow the State Road 48 in the direction of Passo Falzarego and, after about 2 km from the centre, just before the Socrepes car park, take the road that goes uphill to the right in the direction of Piè Tofana. Keep following it for a few minutes until you reach the Ristorante Baita Piè Tofana at the start of the chairlift of the same name.
