It is the mountain that calls. Eleven days on Nanga Parbat
Meeting with Simon Kehrer, Nicola Cemin, Manuela Nones
Greeting by Alessandro Bui
Commander of the Carabinieri in Cortina d’Ampezzo
Entry by reservation
July 2008. At 6000 meters above sea level, on the majestic Rakhiot side of Nanga Parbat, three Italian climbers – Karl Unterkircher, Simon Kehrer, and Walter Nones – are opening a new route on the westernmost eight-thousand of the Himalayas.
Then, the drama: a crevasse suddenly opens beneath Karl's feet, swallowing him.
Nones and Kehrer, alone, will continue to climb and descend for eleven days, amidst storms and frost, completing an endeavor that will go down in history. From that experience, It is the mountain that calls is born, a vibrant and profoundly human tale of the passion, risk, and friendship that bind men to the mountain and to one another, republished by Ronzani.
It is not the search for danger, nor glory, that drives the protagonists, but something deeper: discovery, trust in one another, silence, humility in the face of the immense. All this even at the cost of life – as happened in 2010 to Walter Nones on Cho Oyu. In Cortina, Kehrer revisits that story together with Walter's wife, Manuela Nones, and the Trentino mountain guide Nicola Cemin, to reflect on the meaning of the rope team, on memory, and on the educational value of the mountain.
A meeting to listen to the voice of those who have experienced the mountain as a school of life and as a legacy of courage and love.
