Description

Route of medium difficulty that crosses one of the most evocative and particular Ladin valleys of the Dolomites, among pastures, mountain huts and ancient villages: a place where time seems to have stopped. From Cortina d'Ampezzo bus station, take the SS 51 of Alemagna heading south towards Calalzo. Cross the Valle del Boite and head towards the centre of Cadore. Once you arrive in the charming town of Pieve di Cadore, Titian's birthplace, you will descend towards Calalzo, with a view of the Tudaio. After Calalzo and the Lago di Centro Cadore, head towards Auronzo di Cadore. After one kilometre from where the village starts, you’ll be able to admire the turquoise Lago di Santa Caterina and, in the distance, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Here, turn right and take the steep climb towards the Passo di Sant'Antonio (1,476 m), also known as Passo di Monte Zovo, one of the least known but perhaps the hardest climbs of all the Dolomites (9.1 km, 14 hairpin bends 649 m of elevation gain), which connects the Valle dell’Ansiei with the Comelico. From here descend for 5 kilometres towards Padola, with a beautiful view of the Comelico and the Sesto Dolomites. Continue on the Strada Statale (state road) Carnica via an easy climb to the Passo Monte Croce Comelico (1,636 m), which marks the border between the Sesto Dolomites and the Carnic Alps. From the pass you’ll begin a pleasant descent to the town of San Candido, in the Natural Park of the Tre Cime Dolomites. Continue in the direction of Dobbiaco and head on the SS 51 di Alemagna towards Cortina d'Ampezzo, to reach the starting point after about 30 kilometres of light climbs and descents. Points of interest: Historic centre of Pieve di Cadore with Titian's house, Lago di Centro Cadore, Lago di Auronzo, restored places of the Great War at the Passo Monte Croce Comelico, the wood artists in Val Comelico.
