Medium-difficulty ski mountaineering trip that goes up the beautiful Val Popena, in the presence of the magnificent Monte Cristallo Massif and Piz Popena.
Leave the car in the small parking lot on the hairpin bend of the road that descends from Misurina to Carbonin and that crosses the Rio Popena near a small bridge, then take path 222. After crossing the bridge and ascending, the forest thins out and the valley begins to open up, offering beautiful views of the Cristallino di Misurina on the right and Monte Popena on the left.
From here, a short detour to Forcella Popena is recommended (pay attention to the snow conditions), where you’ll see the ruins of the old mountain hut built in 1935 but then destroyed by a large fire in 1938. Here you can enjoy a wonderful view of the majestic Sorapis and Lago Misurina. Once back on your tracks, head towards the Corno d’Angolo, slightly uphill.
First you’ll arrive at a fork – continue east, climbing gradually to the summit (2,430 m).
The first part of the descent up to the fork, as its slope is greater and the valley is very wide, will be very satisfying to skiers.
The descent continues following the ascent path along the valley and then for some stretches in the woods.
The last part runs along the Rio Popena.
