5 TORRI - COL GALLINA
During the Great War, the Cinque Torri were the cornerstone of the Italian line at the Dolomite front. As early as 24 May 1915, the day after Italy entered the war, the Fenestrelle Alps occupied the area, establishing the line that passed through the Cinque Torri, the Tofana di Rozes and the south-eastern side of the Col dei Bos.
In Bai de Dones (area below the Cinque Torri) there was the artillery that conducted the Italian fireworks against the crest of Mount Casale and on Mount Ciaval in the Dolomites of Fanes, teeming with Austro-Hungarian positions.
From the Cinque Torri you can enjoy an excellent view of most of the Austro-Hungarian positions, on the entire left side of the Val Costeana. An observatory was then placed on the Major Tower of the Cinque Torri to follow the operations, which allowed us to see the explosions of the mine on Lagazuoi, Col di Lana, Castelletto and Sief.
Unlike other Italian positions, here the line of defence was immediately established with trenches, deposits and caves dug into the mountain. The area housed an Artillery Command, who in winter, due to the harsh climate and heavy snowfall, moved to the hotel in Cortina.
Immerse yourself in the restored trenches of the Open Air Museum of the Great War with a simple hike suitable for the whole family from Bai de Dones or, alternatively, by taking the chairlift. Here you can experience first-hand those historic moments that our soldiers faced.
Don’t miss the historical re-enactments staged every year in summer with faithfully reconstructed costumes and performances.
In the nearby Col Gallina, on the other hand, you can spend a night at the front in the Italian outpost of Cima Gallina, both in summer and winter, with a simple hike or a snowshoe hike at sunset with an expert historical guide.
