COL DEI BOS - VAL TRAVENANZES

The Col dei Bos is definitely worth a visit to see several remnants of the Great War up close, including the famous Ospedaletti that paint a truly spectacular landscape!

Easily accessible from Passo Falzarego, the Col dei Bos is the head of the long and wild Val Travenanzes and stands between the Piccolo Lagazuoi and the Tofana di Rozes.

A hike through Forcella Col dei Bos cannot be missed: a crossroads of more or less demanding paths that touch the Italian trenches of the Col dei Bos, its rear roads coming from the Val Costeana and the stones and improvised stations built by the Austrians while they were forced to step back. In 1916, along Forcella Col dei Bos, the Italian trenches ran from the Mysterious Stone to the Castelletto della Tofana di Rozes: from here the soldiers looked out over the Val Travenanzes, which was mostly an Austro-Hungarian line of defence.

Val Travenanzes

For a walk through history, the wild Val Travenanzes is a mandatory stop: a long valley without support points, but full of breathtaking views, ruins and rubble from the Great War that will leave you speechless!

The valley, between the Tofane group on one side and the Lagazuoi and the Fanes Dolomites on the other, was occupied by Austro-Hungarian troops who tried to exploit the rock formations to protect themselves from the enemy fire that struck from Forcella Fontananegra and then from the Masarè valley at the base of the Tofane.

Even along the Forcella Travenanzes you can see many traces of the war: Austro-Hungarian posts with loopholes dug into the rock facing south towards the Italian side and the remains of war objects that can still be found on the stream bed.

Note of merit under the wall of the Tofana di Rozes is the famous Minighel staircase, built by the blacksmith Luigi Gilarduzzi in 1907, manager of the Wolf Glanwellhütte mountain hut. During the First World War, the Italians bent all the rungs, so as not to allow the Austrians to use them to cross the pass, but in the 1960s the Cortina Alpine Guides did their best to put them back into use while keeping the original rungs and now you can try it yourself.
