CRISTALLO

The Cristallo, an impervious mountain between the Ampezzo and the Pusteria Valley, was part of the Italian line, but it was difficult to conquer and hold the peaks, due to the low temperatures above 3000 m and the particular high-altitude environment. In May 1915, the Italians occupied the east, west and south ridges, while the Austrians limited themselves to guarding the ridges near SS 51, the Forame, the Costabella chain and Mount Fumo (Rauchkofel), digging deep trenches that ran from its slopes to Mount Piana.

The war ruins are clearly visible along the iconic Ivano Dibona via ferrata that crosses the entire mountain group through barracks, tunnels and bivouacs, such as the Buffa di Perrero (2760 m), testifying to the great adaptation of soldiers on this difficult front.

Even Mount Forame, on the north-west side of the Cristallo, is rich in Austro-Hungarian war finds, but it is not very popular because difficult to reach. You can see bases, military shelters, ledges and caves dug over time: traces of the great mountaineering value of the Austrian soldiers who occupied the East and the West Points.
