CRODA ROSSA
The Croda Rossa d’Ampezzo, so called because of the unmistakable red colour of the rock, is dotted with remains of war, unfortunately in a state of neglect. The mountain group, which closes the Ampezzo valley to the north and overlooks the Strada Alemagna (SS 51), hides Austro-Hungarian war remains that were intended to hinder the Italian advance to the north.
Among the peaks of the Croda Rossa the Croda de R’Ancona stands out for its historical importance. Even today you come across a series of rubble of war remains. The Austro-Hungarians chose this peak because, despite its modest altitude of 2,366 m, it offers a wide view in every direction, from Cristallo to Tofane.
Son Pouses is a stronghold at its side with many fortifications, galleries and also a relic of the coat of arms of the double-headed eagle, symbol of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, whose two heads symbolise the two empires.
Some remains of Italian posts, on the other hand, are visible only on the slopes of the Croda de R’Ancona, since the multiple Italian attempts at conquest were in vain.
