FANES - FURCIA ROSSA - COL ROSÀ

Military trails, barracks and positions of the Austro-Hungarian army in the Dolomites of Fanes on the wild Val Travenanzes where the war line ran.

From the peaks of Fanes, the Austro-Hungarian side had a large sector of the Italian front under fire from the Tofane to the Col Rosà, from the Cinque Torri to Cima Gallina. These peaks are fully enjoyable with hikes or via ferrata with very long approach and return times, because there are no footholds.

Specifically, Mount Ciaval presents a path built in 1915 by soldiers with the remains of trenches, shelters and loopholes concentrated in the ridge area, in a breathtaking lunar landscape. Mount Castello, on the other hand, is a tower a bit isolated from the other peaks, on the slopes of which there is the Bivacco della Pace (2,760 m): a wooden building erected on the basis of a military barracks, as well as one of the few stopping points along the Via della Pace. The Furcia Rossa is divided into four scenic peaks and here you can experience walking on the paths and ledges that were travelled by soldiers day and night during the war. On the top of Mount Vallon Bianco there is a summit cross and a bench built on the wheels of an old cannon: the memory of the war that has indelibly marked this wonderful territory.

Col Rosà

Col Rosà closes the Val Travenanzes with its Italian posts, with its tactical role of control and cover in operations against Croda de R’Ancona and Son Pouses, an enemy stronghold. On the top of Col Rosà you can still see war artefacts, galleries and posts that overlook the Vallon Bianco and the Furcia Rossa; on the north side there are traces of wooden barracks and, sometimes for the luckiest, food boxes used by soldiers in the war.
