REGOLE

D'AMPEZZO

They are a Cortina institution at the centre of the community’s social life.

They follow an order dating back to 1200 that still today unites the descendants of the original families of the Ampezzo valley, the Regolieri, who manage the territory of Cortina according to the Laudi, the ancient laws.

This institution is recognised by Italian state law through specific laws that protect its particular reality.

In fact, the Regole lands cannot be sold, nor are they subject to change of use: they are a natural, cultural and economic heritage in co-ownership, to be passed on to children, and where conservation and productive use coincide.

Today they look after around 16,000 hectares of forest, with logging and naturalistic forestry. Some huts are still used for cattle grazing. Since 1990, the Regole have also governed the Natural Park of the Ampezzo Dolomites.
