CLIMBING

Over 1,000 climbing routes

Rock lovers: once you experience the rocks surrounding Cortina d’Ampezzo, you will want to come back time and time again. This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and spectacular areas in the Alps for climbers, with over 1,000 climbing routes and crags for sport climbing, almost exclusively on the Dolomite, full of crimps, ledges, roofs and square holds.

Another discipline that can be enjoyed in Cortina is bouldering, a specialty of dynamic, linked movements on low boulders without the use of ropes, but with protective mattresses. Choose between different lines of all levels of difficulty for training, such as in Campo, Volpera or Sass de Stria areas.

Gruppo Scoiattoli Cortina

Historic group of mountaineers and climbers from Cortina united by a passion for the mountains, climbing, the Dolomites and their country.

The Gruppo Scoiattoli Cortina was founded on 1 July 1939 by ten young people from Ampezzo: Albino Alverà (Boni), Silvio Alverà (Boricio), Luigi Ghedina (Bibi), Romano Apollonio (Dwarf), Angelo Bernardi (Alo), Ettore Costantini (Old), Siro Dandrea (Cajuto), Giuseppe Ghedina (Tomasc), Bortolo Pompanin (Bortolin).

What are the requirements to join the group? You must be from Cortina, currently reside in Cortina and also be a skier. The first name of the group was in fact the Società rocciatori e sciatori gli Scoiattoli (Gli Scoiattoli Rock Climbers and Skiers Club).

The Scoiattolo coat of arms is now recognised throughout the world, just as the famous red sweater with the white squirrel embroidered on the left arm is a symbol of the Ampezzo mountaineering environment. A logo inextricably linked to many mountaineering feats, including the conquest of K2 (8,611 m) which took place on 31 July 1954 by the Scoiattolo Lino Lacedelli.

Today the group has over 90 members, united by a passion for climbing and committed to exploring and opening new routes on the Dolomite walls, mountaineering activities, voluntary mountain rescue, enhancement and promotion of climbing locations in Cortina, as well as organisation of sporting events.
