MOUNTAINEERING
Pinnacles, spires and towers of the Ampezzo Dolomites stand out in the sky awaiting the most intrepid adventurers. Are you one of them?
Try over 1,000 classic and modern routes on peaks that have been the scene of some of the key stages in mountaineering history. The thrill of reaching a great milestone like the summit of a mountain is a conquer you will remember forever. Experience it among the most beautiful and glorious rocks, such as the south face of Tofana di Rozes or the famous Cinque Torri.
How did mountaineering begin in Cortina?
The Viennese Paul Grohmann, with the first Ampezzo mountain guide Francesco Lacedelli (known as Chéco da Melères), was the first to climb the Tofana di Mezzo up to its 3,244 m. and many other peaks such as Tofana di Rozes, Sorapìs, Antelao and Pelmo.
Cortina already has nine official mountain guides, authorised by the so-called "legitimacy booklet" stamped every year by the District Captain and assigned for the first time to Fulgenzio Dimai Deo.
Grohmann publishes the book Wanderungen in den Dolomiten and makes the beauty of the Dolomites and their routes famous throughout Europe.
The guide's badge was introduced by the Central Committee of the Alpenverein in Vienna, to distinguish professionals from those who practised mountaineering unofficially.
The guides Antonio Dimai Deo and Agostino Verzi, together with J.L.Heath, open the classic route on the south face of Punta Fiames.
The number of mountain guides and mountaineering enthusiasts who continue to open new routes and experiment on the Dolomites increases, such as the famous Angelo Dibona.
Over 1000 classic and modern routes are the scene of personal feats by those who love challenges pushing their own limits.
