The name Cortina d’Ampezzo was given after the First World War. The residential nucleus built in the centre of the Ampezzo Valley was named Cortina, which means closed or fenced locality.
Since ancient times in the valley, where the Parish Church can be found today, there was a cemetery surrounded by a wall: for this reason, the place was called Cortina, meaning cemetery in Ladin.
Ampezzo is the specification of Cortina and originates from the Latin amplus, wide, in reference to the Boite Valley, more extensive here than in other areas.
