CROSS-COUNTRY
SKIING
Fantastic symphony of sinuous tracks
Immersed in enchanting landscapes, cross-country trails offer a unique experience for nature and sport lovers. The perfectly groomed slopes are part of the Dolomiti Nordic Ski circuit, the largest in Europe, and wind through snow-covered forests and valleys, ensuring breathtaking scenery and tranquillity.
A long tradition
In Cortina cross-country skiing was one of the first winter sports to be practised. The first Nordic World Ski Championships were held in February 1927; 1936 saw the first cross-country Palio, the oldest competitive event in the Ampezzo Valley; and in 1956 the Winter Olympics, including cross-country competitions, were held in Cortina.
The European Student Championships were also held on the competitive slopes of the Tre Croci Pass, where Italian and Olympic athletes such as Maurilio De Zolt, Pietro Piller Cottrer, Silvio Fauner, Anna Comarella and Ole Einar Bjørndalen trained.
The slopes
Passo Tre Croci
For experienced cross-country skiers, Cortina dedicates the highly technical FIS trails of Passo Tre Croci, plunged in the silence of the Dolomites nature at 1,800 metres.
Given the high altitude, the slopes have natural snow and are among the first to open and the last to close.
Tickets can be purchased at the Tourist Office of Cortina d’Ampezzo (for more information, call +39 0436 869086).
Fiames
The simple tracks of the Fiames Sport Nordic Centre are suitable for beginners and children approaching this sport, both for classic and skating techniques.
From the school camp, then, for those wishing to extend the activity, take the former railway track that leads up to the Cimabanche Pass, amidst enchanted woods and evocative tunnels.
