Description

Rifugio Città di Fiume Arrival Rifugio Palafavèra (or Rifugio Passo Staulanza) From the Rifugio Città di Fiume, follow the good mule track marked 480 that soon leads to the Forcella Foràda (Foràta on the map), at 1,977 metres. Leaving the mule track which continues north-east to the Val de Foràda, continue south, still on path 480, on the Sentiero "Gino Flaibani", which allows you to cross and thus also "circumnavigate" the Pelmo massif. Returning south-east, you’ll conquer a steep gully, follow meagre high-altitude pastures and descend a little to a grassy shoulder that originates from Cima Foràda. To the right is the wild Circo di Val d'Àrcia. You’ll painstakingly ascend the landslide cirque, which offers a splendid view of the superb northern walls of the Pelmo, and with one last climb you’ll finally reach the Forcella di Val d'Àrcia, at 2,476 m, a small window on the great Cadore. From the pass, descend to the right, cross two impressive gravelly gullies and, following good tracks, you’ll reach a spacious and clearly visible pass with a rocky outcrop. From here, descend diagonally down the huge flow of gravel that descends from the Forca Rossa, pass near the beginning of the Cengia di Ball (normal route to the summit of the Pelmo) and, heading south, reach the Rifugio Venezia "Albamaria De Luca", at 1,946 metres. The Rifugio Venezia is an excellent stopover point for those who wish to extend "their own" Alta Via by a day, or extend the easy and very worthwhile next stage by a couple of hours. It stands on a hump near the Sella (or Pass) di Rutorto, at 1,931 m, in an enviable scenic position overlooking the nearby Cadore Dolomites and at the base of the superb North-Eastern Pillar of the Pelmo. Starting point for the Cengia di Ball and the Pelmo summit. Owned by the Venice Section of the CAI, it was built in 1892 and renovated in 1954. Open mid-June to mid-September, it serves as a family-type hotel. It offers 62 beds, plus 10 in the winter room. Indoor toilets with water and hot shower available. Lighting with generator and photovoltaic system. CNSAS "118" Rescue Station Mountain hut telephone number: +39 0436 96 84 / +39 320 0103872. Email: [email protected] From the mountain hut, climb moderately to the south on path 472 and you’ll soon be at Sella di Rutorto. From here, continue south-west, gently traversing under the imposing walls of the South Face of the Pelmo to the Lac (Lach), where the Val de Cuna and the Costàuta meet at an altitude of around 1,968 m. We now turn west, pass the southern base of the mighty Pelmetto at le Mandre and arrive near Col delle Crépe Cavaliere, where path 472 continues to Passo Staulanza. Take left (north-west) path 474, on marshy terrain, which shortly afterwards turns decisively south-west and goes downhill through the Val del Ru Bianco until it comes out on the State Road 251 at Palafavèra, at 1,507 m (Pala Favera, on the map), where there are a few hotel-mountain huts and a campsite. The Rifugio Palafavèra is open from June to the end of September and during the winter season. It offers 25 beds and hotel services. Mountain hut telephone number: +39 0437 789133.
