LAGAZUOI

Today, Lagazuoi represents one of the most symbolic places on the war front, being the most perforated mountain in the Dolomites.

In fact, you can venture into kilometres of trenches and tunnels dug into the mountain both by the Austro-Hungarian army, the first to occupy it, and by the Italian one, which arrived later to reach Val Badia.

Both troops built numerous tunnels that soon led to a mine war: the first Austrian one exploded in 1916. A year later there were two more trying in vain to dismantle the Cengia Martini, an Italian stronghold, and so it continued for a long time.

Near the Piccolo Lagazuoi on the Passo Falzarego, you can immediately see the scree on the slopes of the mountain, the result of large explosions of cubic metres of rock.

A visit to the Lagazuoi Open Air Museum cannot be missed: on the top of the mountain you will find trenches, tunnels, galleries and shacks accompanied by 130 plaques posted along the way that narrate the gory events. To immerse yourself even more in history, download the official app and follow the interactive tour.
