Description

From Rifugio Pian de Fontana, head south on path 514, cross the pastureland and go to the pass at an altitude of 1,592 m, then with rapid zigzags descend the wooded slope to a fork at an altitude of 1,500 m. Keep on path 514 climbing immediately south-west and then traversing south along the coast, zigzagging, until reaching the precipitous edge where the Forcella La Varetta, at 1,704 m, overlooks an idyllic basin full of flowers and dominated by the red cliffs of Talvéna. Opposite you’ll see the superb Schiara. A short distance away is the Casèra La Varetta, at 1,709 m, which can offer a spartan shelter in case of need. Water available nearby. From here, continue towards Forcella Nerville and start climbing towards Forcella del Marmol, where the Ferrata Piero Rossi begins. Shortly after the start of the ferrata you come to the Marmol bivouac, an emergency shelter with 6 beds. From here, in about three hours, again by ferrata, you’ll reach the south face of the Schiara. From here, it is easy to reach the Rifugio 7º Alpini in half an hour. The Rifugio 7º Alpini was built at Pis Pilón in 1951 and modernised in 1970-75, while the nearby Lussato Shelter was already standing in 1967 on the remains of an old pastoral structure. Owned by the Belluno section of the CAI, it offers hotel service with 58 places and 5 in the winter shelter and is open from mid-June to mid-September. Water available inside. Indoor and outdoor toilers, shower and hot water are available. Lighting with generator and photovoltaics. Variants

Option to avoid tackling the via ferrata (13 km - 8 hours): from the Rifugio Pian de Fontana, follow path 520 towards "Casere Grisol di Dentro". From here, turn right and climb up path 527 to the north face of Monte Pelf. The path, which is very steep in places, leads to the Forcella col Torond, from where you take path 505 into the bucolic Cajada basin. Following path 505, you’ll pass the ruins of Casera Caneva and rise up towards Forcella Caneva, which is reached by a last section sunken between majestic walls. From the pass, wide meadows open out to the west, leading to Forcella Pis Pilon, from which descend to the Rifugio Settimo Alpini.
