SASS DE STRIA
Don’t miss a visit to the natural defensive fortress of the Austro-Hungarian front, much sought after by Italians but never conquered: the Sass de Stria.
Coming from Cortina, this characteristic mountain can be easily reached by car through the Passo Falzarego and Passo Valparola, parking just below. To climb to the top, you can take a via ferrata or a hiking path, touching history: tunnels, trenches and posts, such as the Vonbank or Edelweiss stations, have been restored and the war artefacts reconstructed.
Thanks to these restoration works, the Sass de Stria is now part of the Cortina Open Air Museum of the Great War, together with the Cinque Torri and the Lagazuoi.
A visit to the former Sass de Stria is also interesting, where you can enter the heart of the mountain in what was an Austro-Hungarian fortress with an important tactical function because it was very advanced on the Italian front and limited the activity of enemy patrols.
Here you find the Goiginger Station (or “Selletta”) and the related 500 m long tunnel that is still passable today and built to transport supplies between Selletta and Passo Valparola, without being shot by machine guns in front of Cengia Martini on the Lagazuoi. In the tunnel, stations for cannons and machine guns, dormitories and warehouses were placed, while on the Selletta there were trenches to keep the side of Livinallongo with the Andraz Castle under fire.
