A trail running route for experienced runners.
It runs along the entire length of Monte Nuvolau: starting from the Passo Giau and touching the Cinque Torri, it also offers a view of the Marmolada, Val Fiorentina and Col di Lana. From Cortina head towards Pocol and then take the road to Passo Giau where you’ll find a large parking lot. From Passo Giau take path 443 which will take you along the eastern side of Gusela del Nuvolau until you reach Rifugio Cinque Torri. The road is quite flat along the first stretch, given the high altitude start, but the last stretch before reaching the characteristic Rifugio Cinque Torri features steep zigzags uphill to regain altitude. From the Rifugio Cinque Torri, continue uphill along the dirt road towards the Rifugio Scoiattoli, where you can admire a magnificent view of the Cinque Torri and the majestic Tofana di Rozes.
From there, continue along path 439 until you reach the Rifugio Averau, on the homonymous fork at 2,416 m. The view offered by the mountain hut terrace is truly incredible – on one side you can admire from above the Cinque Torri, and in the distance the Lastoi de Formin, the Croda da Lago and the Rocchette, as well as some glimpses of the Conca Ampezzana.
On the other side you can see the Marmolada, Col di Lana and Colle Santa Lucia. Along the way you’ll be able to contemplate incredible Dolomite panoramas, which make the entire route worthwhile. From Averau take path 464 which will take you over the hill, and continue along the other side of Nuvolau. Continue until the crossroads with path 452 and take the latter which will complete the loop until you return to Passo Giau.
This last stretch initially develops close to Nuvolau and has steep and stony sections, while the second part descends gently along the coast and ends in the middle of the flat, green meadows of Giau.
