Caution and respect in the mountains
Mountains, valleys, forests, meadows, lakes, waterfalls and a thousand paths that get lost in them: exploring the Dolomites on foot is a dream. To enjoy it to the full and avoid ruining your hike, it is important to remember that the mountains demand attention and respect. Below you will find some good rules and tips for experiencing the mountains safely.
The mountains deserve…
...caution
- Program
Before leaving for a hike, please consider the following precautions: study the route by examining its length and difficulty, pay attention to how the paths are marked and how long it will take to complete the hike. Pay attention also to the altitude of the route and consequently to the climate and the possible presence of snow. Finally, pay attention to the refreshment points along the way and how far they are from each other.
- Self-knowledge
Duration and difficulty are relative and depend according to your level of preparation and fitness. Assess your condition objectively and consider how you feel before departure. Take into account any health issues and how the altitude and elevation gain of the hike may affect them.
- Weather
It may seem obvious, but the weather should be monitored very closely. Assess not only rainfall, but also temperatures and wind. Rely on your usual weather service, but also on local reports such as Arpav. Take the weather into account when deciding when to leave and how long it will take you.
- Time of departure
It’s a good idea to leave early in the morning: the weather tends to be more stable and you won’t run the risk of returning after sunset. Take into account longer times than necessary, because unexpected situations may occur and make sure to come back before dark.
- Clothing and equipment
Always approach hiking with the right clothing. In addition to sportswear, remember: suitable shoes are essential to avoid sprains and slips, layered clothing is advisable for possible temperature changes, and a waterproof jacket is essential. The equipment varies according to the type of route and may include poles and headlamp. As for the backpack, do not skimp on water and always bring a snack, even if you do not expect to need it. Don’t forget to leave with the map of the trails and with your phone fully charged. Bring sunglasses, hat and cream to protect you from the sun and a garbage bag. It is good practice to have a first aid kit with you, to which we recommend adding blister patches. Finally, we suggest you also take some cash, as credit cards may not work in the mountain huts, especially in bad weather.
- Community
Participating in the activity with others is good for mood as well as safety. If you do participate on your own, share your schedule with friends, relatives or hotel staff, including your destination, your route and what time you plan to come back. This information will be invaluable in an emergency.
- Mountain professionals
The best way to go on a hike in complete safety is to rely on mountain professionals: mountain, nature, hiking and medium mountain guides are perfectly trained and know the territory very well.
- Accept your limits
It is important to learn to accept your limits and not get caught up in over-excitement or competition. If you are faced with a difficult situation or the times have lengthened, consider interrupting the hike and coming back along the same route.
- Insurance and rescue
As well as taking all necessary precautions, you will enjoy peace of mind if you take out insurance to cover you in case of an accident in the mountains. In case of emergency, call 118. If an emergency occurs, remain calm and provide the operator with as much information as you can, and be as precise as possible.
...respect
When you hike in the mountains you must be respectful, allowing those who come after you to enjoy the area in the same way and ensuring the safety of local life species.
- Waste
Do not leave your waste in the mountains and, if possible, also avoid leaving it in a mountain hut. Keep a bag in your backpack to put the waste in and then take it back to the valley. For smokers we recommend packing a portable ashtray.
- Flowers
Flowers are the most beautiful decoration of mountain meadows and forests and there is no reason to take them away! Consider taking a picture of them instead and you will be able to enjoy it long after your visit. The mountain environment is fragile and over the years the collection of certain flowers has endangered their survival. Those who love the mountains leave the flowers where they belong.
- Animals
Along your route you will meet animals of all kinds: do not feed them, do not scare them and do not get too close to them. Remember that dogs must be kept on a leash and consider their needs and limits too, including what routes they can take and carrying food and water for them.
